Rawalpindi, October 19, 2024: Today, Central Jail Adiala relaxed its 10-day meeting prohibition, enabling more than 8,000 inmates and detainees to meet with their loved ones.
The relatives of the detained, experienced difficulties due to the ban by the Punjab Home Department for security concerns. Authorities in the twin cities, including Adiala Jail, have also adopted unprecedented security measures in response to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) conference in Islamabad. Authorities at Adiala Jail strengthened security measures throughout the ban period.
Punjab Home Department enforced the order on October 8, which affected all meetings, including those with Imran Khan, the founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), his wife Bushra Bibi, and the more than 8,000 inmates there.
Visitors who were unable to see their family members experienced significant distress due to the prohibition. In addition to conducting search operations across the facility, jail officials used this time to bolster security measures.
Jail Police, Punjab Rangers, Civil Defence, Punjab Police, the Bomb Disposal Squad, Rescue 1122, and firefighters participated in several security exercises that were held within the prison as well as along its exterior walls.
These security exercises served to guarantee the prisoners’ safety in the event of an emergency. Beginning today, family visits to all inmates will be permitted according to the regular schedule.
