Withholding of soyabean shipments at Karachi port could lead to egg, chicken meat crisis. Pakistan Poultry Association warns

THATHA: Dec 8,2022: Poultry owners have expressed fear that the supply of chicken and eggs my stop within a month due to the shortage of feed.

Addressing an emergency press conference at the Karachi Press Club, the poultry association office bearers expressed their serious concern over the non-clearance of soybean containers withheld at Karachi Port.

The poultry owners said soybean and canola are the main ingredients used in poultry feed. Currently, there are more than 6 lakh tons of soybeans at the port, which is not being cleared.

“Any issues with soybean importers from other ministries should be resolved immediately and orders should be issued for the clearance of soybeans at the port, so that the poultry industry across the country saved from a looming crisis.

They said at present poultry owners across the country were supplying 38 lakh chickens per day, besides providing three and a half million eggs.

“If the issue of feed supply for the poultry industry is not resolved immediately, there is a possibility that the supply of chicken and eggs will stop across the country within a month”, they office bearers warned,

According to the poultry association Most of the industry has been shut down and if this industry is completely shut down, not only will around 25 lakh people be unemployed, but the risk of food insecurity in the country will also increase.
