*At the Vanguard *

Amidst the nationwide jubilation over the receipt of the first billion from the IMF, as confirmed by the State Bank of Pakistan, my heart is burdened with concern for the safety of two brave officers captured in a photograph, seemingly contemplating how to safeguard the country’s interests. These fine officers incidentally both known to me personally are indeed the most invaluable assets of our nation, and it is imperative that they are appointed to positions where they can fortify the institutions they represent, rather than needlessly risking their lives on the frontlines.

With this post, I earnestly appeal to the Honourable Prime Minister and the Interior Minister to ensure that the most exceptional individuals, designated for the esteemed role of “Officers on Special Duty” drawing free perks and privileges of the poor nation , are granted the opportunity to replace these exceptionally capable officers namely Nasir Mehmood Satti as Regional Police Officer D. I. Khan and Dr. Karam Elahi as a well read and learned Collector Customs. This is not because they are fearful or demoralized, but rather because their determination is further reinforced to ensure that this lucrative smuggling route is effectively sealed. However, I harbor doubts that their commendable individual efforts will bear fruit unless senior officers of their caliber are retained in pivotal staff roles to ensure the formulation and implementation of sound policies, rather than being exposed to the constant threat of being targeted in imminent suicide attacks, sponsored by those who stand to lose billions.

In the current scenario, many sick minds with faint hearts would advocate that these officers need to be there to support the system without giving due thought to the serious collateral damage to the morale of the force God forbid if these officers are taken out. After all no dead commander has ever won a battle and we have already lost many gems in this thankless war on terror that has many dimensions like an octopus.

It is indeed ironic that officers of such impeccable professionalism, whose presence resulted into the spike in violent attacks on both the police and customs departments, are not tactically withdrawn from such perilous situations. It is a tragic reality that in Pakistan, only the influx of foreign loans is celebrated, often at the expense of our invaluable human resources, which remain the true assets of our motherland. Long Live Pakistan And The Few Honest Who Stand By Her.
