CCP Collaborates with IHCBA and WIL to Enhance Understanding of Competition Law

ISLAMABAD, October 18,2024: Speakers underscored the Competition Commission of Pakistan’s (CCP) commitment to fostering fair competition and its economic benefits for consumers and the overall economy.

They expressed these views a session titled “Competition Law & Practice,” organized by the CCP in collaboration with the Islamabad High Court Bar Association (IHCBA) and the Women in Law Initiative Pakistan (WIL), provided a platform for legal professionals to engage with regulators and discuss important issues related to competition law.

Attendees included senior CCP officials, IHCBA office bearers, WIL representatives, and a significant number of female lawyers.

In his keynote address, CCP member Salman Amin emphasized the Commission’s dedication to promoting fair competition and stressed the importance of a compliance regime that minimizes regulatory intervention.

Kishwar Khan, Director General of the CCP, addressed key aspects of competition law, including mergers and acquisitions, exemption criteria, prohibited agreements, and abuse of dominance.

Nadia Usman Chaudhary, Founder of the WIL Initiative, outlined the organization’s mission to advocate for gender equality within the legal profession. Sibah Farooq, Chairperson of the IHCBA’s Committee on Legal Awareness, provided insights into the history of competition law in Pakistan, highlighting significant CCP orders upheld by the Supreme Court.

The session included a dynamic panel discussion moderated by Maryam Zafar, Director at the CCP, featuring contributions from CCP Directors Shazia Ashraf, Barrister Zainab N. Khan, and Barrister Zainab Janjua. This was followed by an interactive Q&A session with senior CCP officials.

Concluding the event, Riasat Ali Azad, President of the IHCBA, praised the collaboration and emphasized the event’s role in enhancing the legal fraternity’s understanding of competition law. He commended the CCP for its efforts to ensure market fairness through robust enforcement.
