Islamabad : April 9,2024 : Amidst boycot of Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf (PTI) , Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani of Pakistan People Party (PPP) and Syedal Nasir Khan of Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PMLN) became chairman and deputy chairman respectively of the Senate of Pakistan unopposed.
PTI had announced to boycott the election of chairman and deputy chairman of the Senate citing it as unconstitutional and unlawful as it in its view lacked representation of Khyber Pukhtunkhaw (KPK).
Despite repeated orders of the Election Commission , the speaker of KPK assembly, where PTI is in the powers, had not administrated oath from the members who won on the reserved seats of the provincial assembly. KPK assembly blocked a democratic process by declining oath to the reserved members of the provincial assembly. Later , PTI moved Islamabad High Court (IHC) for blocking elections of the deputy and chairman senate scheduled for April 9,2024. Here again PTI failed to get relief and IHC rejected its petition seeking disallowing the election of the deputy and chairman of the Senate.
PTI is continuing its policy to use cheap tricks to undermine democratic process in Pakistan. Surprisingly , PTI legal minds too are following its founding chairman Imran Khan’s policy to make every institution of Pakistan controversial and add to its woes particularly on economic side.
In the case of the election of deputy and chairman of the Senate its policy of a spoiler did not work to its expectations. Rather , its move of denying oath to reserved members of KPK assembly and using it to block the election of deputy and chairman Senate has proved counter productive as it let to unopposed win of Syed Yousaf Raza and Syedal Nasir Khan as chairman and deputy chairman of the Senate on Tuesday.
Prime minister , Shahbaz Sharif, congratulated Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani and Syedal Nasir Khan on winning as Senate chairman and deputy chairman unopposed. In his statement , the prime minister said the win of Syed Yousaf aRaza Gillani and Syedal Nasir Khan as Senate Chairman and deputy chairman was a good omen for Pakistan ‘s democracy.
