Islamabad : March 3,2024: The Senate of Pakistan is taking up a resolution of Senator Bahra Mund of Pakistan People Party (PPP) on Monday (today) ,seeking ban on all social media platforms in Pakistan for propagating anti state content. The resolution holds social media platforms including X , Facebook , Instagram and other of running an organised campaign to malign Pakistan ‘s institutions including the army. Senator Bahra Mund who was served notice last month on the charges of violating the party discipline by supporting a controversial resolution in the Senate seeking delay in February 8 elections is retiring on March 11 , just in a week time. He , through his resolution, calls upon the members of the upper house of Pakistan’s parliament to vote in favour of his resolution to ban all social media outlets for working against Pakistan ‘s national institutions.
Senator Bahra Mund’s resolution of seeking total ban on social media tools is unique in nature . There was not a single such resolution in Pakistan ‘s 76 years history that calls for total ban on all social media outlets. Pakistan has signed a number of memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the access to information and any attempt to ban social media outlets will have far reaching impact on Pakistan .
Meanwhile , Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has issued a warning to Pakistan of serious repercussions in the case its upper house of the parliament tried to pass any resolution such as moved by Senator Bahara Mund of PPP. Meanwhile , PPP has disowned Senator Bahra Mund’s resolution seeking ban on social media in Pakistan. PPP senior leader , Nayyar Bukhari , rushed to a press conference the other day to clarify that senator Bahara Mund’s resolution does not reflect PPP . He also clarified that Senator Bahra Mund was not a PPP member anymore.
