ISLAMABAD: State Minister for Finance and Revenue, Ali Pervaiz Malik, visited the Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP), emphasizing the Commission’s crucial role in addressing market failures and protecting consumers from anti-competitive practices.
During his visit, Malik reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to enhancing CCP’s capacity for greater effectiveness through legislative reforms, follow-up on court cases, and capacity-building initiatives.
Speaking to CCP officials on Wednesday, he stressed the importance of conducting a comprehensive review of the Competition Act to ensure it remains modern and effective in addressing the challenges the Commission faces.
“Competitiveness in markets is essential for safeguarding consumer interests, promoting new startups, and attracting investments,” Malik stated.
CCP Chairman Dr. Kabir Ahmed Sidhu provided the Minister with an overview of the Commission’s roles, functions, performance, and ongoing inquiries in key sectors of the economy. He also outlined the challenges faced by the CCP, including various legal obstacles.
Minister Malik expressed his full support for the CCP in overcoming these challenges. He requested a detailed list of pending court cases and stay orders to present to the Attorney General and Law Ministry for expedited resolution.
He urged Dr. Sidhu to maintain close coordination with the Finance Ministry to ensure effective oversight of consumer interests.
The meeting was attended by CCP Members Saeed Ahmed, Salman Amin, Abdul Rashid Sheikh, Bushra Naz, and the Directors Generals.
