UN issues flash appeal for $ 160 m for Pakistan’s floods affectees

ISLAMABAD/ Geneva: August 30, 2022: The United Nations has issued a flash appeal for $ 160 million immediate financial support to help Pakistan cope with the situation rising out of deadly floods.
The UN secretary general, Antonio Guterres, in his video message appealed to the world community that it should move fast to provide much needed financial aid for Pakistan to avert an imminent human crisis. The UN secretary general while launching flash appeal for Pakistan said “ My heart is burning over flood situation in Pakistan that has left millions in a worse ever flood tragedy. He said the funds to be raised by UN would be provided for food, temporary shelters and medicines.
The UN secretary general’s message was telecast at conference held on Tuesday at Foreign Office for briefing Islamabad-based diplomats on latest post flood situation and the fund required for rescue , rehabilitation of the affectees and reconstruction of damaged infrastructure of Pakistan.
The flash floods that ripped through 70 % areas of Pakistan has wipe away hundreds of bridges, railway and road networks, seasonal crops and livestock in huge numbers. Pakistan is already facing financial crisis and floods have pushed it in the worst situation . Now Pakistan has to change its focus on rehabilitation of flood affectees and reconstruction of damaged houses, roads and railway network.

The UN secretary general thanked those member countries which were already providing financial and logistic support to Pakistan in these difficult times.
Pakistan is struggling to rescue its millions of flood affectees and at the same time its making temporary arrangements to provide them foods, shelters and other basic necessities to mitigate their sufferings.
Pakistan has released an initial report on losses caused by the current floods which suggested that Pakistan has suffered loss of $ over 10 billion as a result of the worst floods of its 75 years history .
Foreign minister, Bilawal Bhutto , also addressed to the diplomats who attended the conference here on Tuesday. He appealed to the world community to come forward and help Pakistan to cope with the situation arisen out of its deadliest floods.
China, Canada, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Iran, US and many other countries have pledged their full support to Pakistan to help rescue flood affectees.
