Pakistan’s mediation for US-Iran deal could yield long term diplomatic , economic gains : Experts say Analyst

Islamabad : Pakistan’s reported role in facilitating dialogue between Iran and the United States has emerged as a significant diplomatic development, with experts suggesting that the country’s efforts could generate substantial political, diplomatic, and economic benefits in the years ahead.
According to foreign affairs expert Prof. Dr. Zafar Nawaz Jaspal, Pakistan’s successful engagement with both Tehran and Washington reflects its growing stature as a credible regional
player capable of maintaining balanced relations with rival states while contributing to peace and stability in the region.

Speaking on the implications of the recently signed Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Iran and the United States, Dr. Jaspal said Pakistan’s ability to preserve neutrality and maintain the confidence of both countries demonstrates its emergence as an influential middle power in international affairs.
“Pakistan has established its credibility with both Iran and the United States. The successful mediation effort highlights the country’s capacity to play a constructive role in regional diplomacy and conflict resolution,” he said.

The agreement, which followed a period of heightened tensions between Tehran and Washington, is being viewed by analysts as a diplomatic achievement that could help reduce instability in the region. Experts believe Pakistan’s role in facilitating dialogue has strengthened its international
image as a responsible and reliable actor capable of bridging differences between opposing sides. Dr. Jaspal noted that one of the most significant outcomes of the understanding could be the economic opportunities that may arise if relations between Iran and the United States continue to improve. He pointed out that any future easing of sanctions on Iran could have positive implications for neighboring countries, including Pakistan.

Among the potential beneficiaries would be the long delayed Iran-Pakistan Gas Pipeline Project, which has remained stalled for years due to sanctions related challenges and geopolitical
constraints. According to Dr. Jaspal, the removal or relaxation of sanctions on Iran could pave the way for the project’s completion.
“The Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline has remained pending primarily because of sanctions on Tehran. If those restrictions are lifted in the future, the project could move forward, providing Pakistan with access to a relatively cheaper and more reliable source of energy,” he explained.
Pakistan has faced persistent energy challenges over the years, including high fuel costs and periodic shortages that have affected industrial growth and economic performance. Analysts
believe that access to Iranian natural gas could help reduce energy costs, strengthen industrial productivity, and support broader economic recovery efforts.
In addition to direct economic benefits, experts argue that reduced tensions between Iran and the United States could contribute to greater regional stability. A more stable environment would likely encourage trade, investment, and economic cooperation across the region, creating indirect
opportunities for Pakistan’s economy.
Dr. Jaspal further emphasized that the diplomatic success has enhanced Pakistan’s standing within the international community. He noted that countries capable of facilitating dialogue and preventing conflict often gain greater recognition and influence in global affairs.
“Pakistan’s mediation role has improved its political and diplomatic image internationally. The country’s contribution to reducing tensions demonstrates that it can play an important role in promoting regional peace and stability,” he said Foreign policy observers believe that such diplomatic achievements can strengthen Pakistan’s reputation as a trusted interlocutor in complex international disputes. This credibility could
potentially create new avenues for diplomatic engagement, strategic partnerships, and economic cooperation with other countries. While the long-term impact of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding will depend on future developments between Tehran and Washington, analysts agree that Pakistan has already secured an important diplomatic gain. By maintaining neutrality, fostering dialogue, and helping create conditions for de-escalation, Islamabad has reinforced its image as a constructive regional
actor.
For Pakistan, the benefits of this diplomatic effort may extend beyond the immediate easing of tensions. From enhancing its international reputation to opening the door for future economic
opportunities particularly in the energy sector the mediation initiative could prove to be a significant milestone in the country’s foreign policy achievements
