BRT Peshawar proved plethora of corruption; NAB recovers Rs 168 billion

Islamabad: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has claimed that it recovered Rs 168.5 billion in Peshawar Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) case.
A statement issued here on Sunday said that NAB made the largest recovery in the BRT project in its 25-year history, it said NAB Khyber Pakhtunkhwa made a huge indirect recovery of 168.5 billion rupees in the case of BRT Peshawar.
It added that thanks to the actions of NAB, this project was completed at the original cost and another 9 billion rupees was saved.

An agreement was reached on the payment of 6 billion rupees. After the agreement, the Peshawar High Court closed all the cases. NAB also rejected the claim of contractors for Rs 31.5 billion from the international arbitration court. It said the investigation of the BRT Peshawar project started in 2018. The investigation revealed allegations of illegal awarding of the BRT contract and misappropriation of government funds. It was proved that 6 projects included in the contract were wrongly given to some specific companies. NAB says that the companies violated the contract and got about one billion rupees without work. NAB also inspected more than 400 bank accounts in the investigation which provided further evidence, the contractors had submitted fake guarantees to the Peshawar Development Authority, as per PDA’s claim, damages of Rs 86 billion were also sought, the contractors neither completed the work within the stipulated period of six months.
Contractors submitted bogus audit report, SECP also confirmed this bogus audit report, NAB investigated foreign companies through their embassies, contractors also claimed 5 billion on the basis of interest payment, the project was completed at the original cost and savings of 9 billion was made.
In 2018, NAB had started a detailed investigation into the illegal contract awarding of BRT Peshawar, government treasury.
