Bushra Bibi Released from Adiala Jail Following Bail in ToshaKhana Case

ISLAMABAD, October 24, 2024:  Bushra Bibi, the wife of imprisoned Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan, has been released from Adiala Jail after a special court issued her release order Toshakhana II case.

Special Judge Central Shahrukh Arjumand issued the release order following an application from Bibi’s counsel, who sought her release after the Islamabad High Court (IHC) granted bail in the case. The jail authorities release Bushra Bibi after receiving release orders.

The Toshakhana case involves allegations of misappropriation of gifts received during Imran Khan’s tenure as Prime Minister. The IHC’s decision to grant bail drew parallels to the Justice Qazi Faiz Isa case, where accountability extended to a husband for his wife’s actions.

During the proceedings, Justice Mian Gul Hasan Aurangzeb questioned the basis for implicating Imran Khan if Bushra Bibi did not submit the gifts in question. He noted the similarities with the Isa case, emphasizing the principle of accountability.

The FIA prosecutor, Umer Majeed, argued that gifts received by state officials must be declared and remain state property unless legally purchased. Justice Aurangzeb also referenced international norms, highlighting that world leaders typically retain gifts according to established protocols.

Bushra Bibi was ordered to be released upon depositing a surety of one million rupees.
