Court indicts Zardari and others in Park Lane case

ISLAMABAD: An accountability court of Islamabad Monday indicted former president, Asif Ali Zardari, through a video link from Bilawal House Karachi. The other accused including Omni Group Chief Executive, Anwar Majeed, Sher Ali, , Farooq Abdullah, Saleem Fasal and M Hanif were also indicted in the case. Former president, Asif Ali Zardari pleaded not guilty during the hearing. The court will proceed further in the case after indicting the accused. During the hearing Asif Ali Zardari maintained that his lawyers were at the Supreme Court and he can not be indicted in the absence of his lawyer. The court of Judge, Muhamamd Azam, rejected the plea of former president and noted that he will be indicted in the case today (August 10) and his lawyers will be marked absence if they do not appear before the court. All the co-accused also maintained that they were innocent and pleaded not guilty before the court. As per indictment, former president influenced concerned authorities during his tenure as president to release loans to front companies operated by co-accused Anwar Majeed and others. The former president allegedly got his front company—Parthenon Private Limited—a loan of Rs 1.5 billion with ill-intention and the money was then transferred for his personal use through fake accounts. The Park Lane case is being investigated under different sections of the National Accountability (NAB) 1999 and Anti Money Laundering Act 2010. In its reference, NAB had accused the former president of causing loss of Rs 3.7 billion through the fake bank accounts.
