ISLAMABAD : Nov 13,2022: The three-day Defense Exhibition Ideas will start on November 15 at Expo Center Karachi and continue till November 18. The launch of IDEAS, an international defense expo is proof of Pakistan’s success in the defense industry whereas participation of foreign delegations is a matter of pride for the country.
The International Defense Exhibition and Seminar (IDEAS) is an important event in South Asia that is organized by Defense Export Promotion Organization (DEPO).
The Expo could not be held in 2020 due to the COVID outbreak and will be held this year after a gap of 4 years.
IDEAS was first launched in the year 2000, later on, supported by defense industries, research development experts, finance experts/ economists, and policy experts and emerged as an important platform for sharing information and exchange in the defense field.
The Traffic Police has issued a route plan for Defense Exhibition Ideas 2022 in Expo Center Karachi. Both tracks of Sirshah Sulaiman Road will be closed from 7 am to 6 pm. It has been directed that heavy and commercial traffic will not be allowed to enter Shah Sulaiman Road from Shaara Faisal Nursery.
Heavy and commercial traffic from the airport will be allowed to reach Napa Chowrangi from Drug Road while Millennium Mall heavy traffic from Rashid Minhas Road will be allowed to enter Dalmia Road.
Similarly, during the exhibition, both tracks of Sirshah Sulaiman Road will be closed from 7 am to 6 pm. DIG Traffic Ahmed Nawaz has advised the citizens to take alternative routes to avoid trouble. The three-day IDEA at Karachi Expo Center will continue from November 15 to November 18, during which only vehicles with specific stickers will be able to enter the Expo Center.
The Commemoration of 11th edition of IDEAS for exchange and promotion of technology signifies Pakistan’s defence sector progress and professionalism. This event will play an important role in not just brining international peace, cooperation and stability but also improve Pakistan’s strategic relationship with other countries. Till now, all editions of IDEAS have been made successful by the efforts of government institutions, Armed forces, state and private defense industries, trading authorities and especially with help from people of Karachi.
The 524 delegations from 45 countries participated in IDEAS 2018. More than 262 high profile delegations also visited the expo. China, Chez Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Jordan, Poland, Russia, South Korea, Turkiye, UAE, Ukraine, USA and Pakistan have established their special setups.
Exhibition includes Pakistan Army Pavilion, Armed Forces Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine, National Logistics Cell, Anti-Narcotics Forces, Frontier Works Organization, Counter IED Organization and Military Training Directorate.
To promote Pakistan’s defense exports, IDEAS Expo will also include display of Al-Khalid Tank, Jet Trainer, JF-17, Craft K-8 and UAVs. IDEAS is a unique platform for showcasing Pakistan’s defense preparedness and training capabilities to international stakeholders. The 11th Edition of the International Defence Exhibition and Seminar, IDEAS 2022 is scheduled from 15th – 18th November 2022 at Karachi Expo Centre (KEC). The IDEAS series is one of the continued successes, with IDEAS-2016 as the most consequential in the history of the exhibition industry of Pakistan.

A total of 56 nations were represented in IDEAS – 2016 in the form of Foreign Delegations and International Exhibitors. 88 Delegations representing 40 countries attended IDEAS – 2016 including high-level delegations headed either by their Defence Ministers, Secretaries, or Services Chiefs of the respective countries. A total of 427 companies (294 foreign and 133 local) exhibited their products during the exhibition. Amongst persistent foreign participation, the countries that were exhibiting for the first time in IDEAS 2016 include Belarus, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Luxembourg, Nigeria, Poland, Romania, and Switzerland.
To boost Pakistan’s exports in Defence Sector, some of the major indigenously developed products showcased during IDEAS – 2016, included the Main Battle Tank Al–Khalid, Fighter Aircraft JF–17 Thunder, Jet Trainer Aircraft K – 8 and a variety of UAVs, etc. IDEAS – 2016 offered a unique opportunity to the international delegates and visitors in acquiring an insight into the entire defense manufacturing and training capabilities of Pakistan, exhibited under a single umbrella. It may be pertinent to highlight that Pakistan has a large defense manufacturing, training, and support infrastructure in place, which not only meets the needs of the Pakistani Armed Forces but also has the capacity to fulfill the demands of other countries with exceptionally high-quality products at mutually acceptable terms.
Amongst the international exhibitors, exclusive country pavilions were set up by Turkey and China. Defense products and equipment from companies representing North America, South America, Europe, Asia, and the Far East were also impressively displayed through various stands.
Earlier the inaugural launch of IDEAS occurred in 2000 and was a vehicle to promote Pakistan’s domestic arms manufacturing businesses whilst providing a stage for international vendors to offer solutions to the requirements of the tri-services of Pakistan. The event, having always been scheduled for the Karachi Expo Centre, in its first year attracted forty-five delegations from foreign countries.
In 2002 its second year the event had attracted wide international interest with General Hamid reporting to Dawn newspaper that exhibitors from China, Turkey, France, Russia, Italy, Romania, Ukraine, United Kingdom, USA, UAE, and Saudi Arabia were expected to attend. Already by 2002, IDEAS was touted as the largest commercial event in the history of Pakistan with 45 official delegations from 30 countries attending and 110 exhibition stands from 25 countries.
In 2004 3rd International Defence Exhibition and Seminar was held at Karachi Expo Centre. IDEAS has taken a unique role in highlighting Pakistan’s potential for defence ties and trade between countries in Asia, the Middle East, and the African region while facilitating the need for an enhanced market base for indigenously manufactured defence products.”
IDEAS 2006 held on 20 November 2006, was reduced to one day and DEPO had targeted to attract 74 countries for it. Furthermore, with mounting security problems in Pakistan and the rising profile of IDEAS, the army declared the whole area surrounding the Expo Centre a high-security zone for a week, which included the cessation of any laboring to complete development work in the immediate vicinity.
The 5th International Defence Exhibition and IDEAS 2008 was inaugurated by Prime Minister. The exhibition area alone had grown to have diverse company representatives from 58 countries and the new Director-General of DEPO, Major General Mohammad Farooq reported that of the 256 participating companies, 94 were Pakistani and 162 from abroad. Furthermore, over 100 breakout meetings between government and industry had also been arranged and the event would feature as its highlight a static display of the joint venture fighter jet launched by the Pakistanis and Chinese, the JF-17 Thunder.
The JF-17 Thunder Aircraft at IDEAS 2008 General Farooq, DG DEPO, stated that a considerable contributing factor to the success of IDEAS 2008 was the introduction of a soft launch several months prior to the exhibition on 23 May 2008. The IDEAS-2010 event was canceled due to floods, In view of devastating floods that affected 22 million people and resulted in the loss of valuable lives and property, the Government of Pakistan had decided to cancel IDEAS-2010.
In 2012 a total of 57 nations were represented in IDEAS – 2012 in the form of Foreign Delegations and International Exhibitors. Around 80 Delegations representing 50 nations attended IDEAS – 2012 including 24 high-level delegations headed either by the Defence Ministers, Secretaries, or Services Chiefs of the respective countries.
The 7th International Defence Exhibition and Seminar (IDEAS – 2012) was successfully held at Expo Center, Karachi, Pakistan from 7 – 11 November 2012. Notwithstanding its conduct after a lapse of four years instead of two, the event received an overwhelming response from across the globe A total of 209 firms (135 foreign and 74 local) exhibited their products during the exhibition. Total attendance of IDEAS – 2012 exceeded the figure of 30,000, which includes Foreign Delegates, Trade Visitors, and Exhibitors.
IDEAS – 2012 embodied a host of activities comprising a display of different defence products/equipment, an impressive Inauguration Ceremony, conduct of various seminars, sideline conferences, and networking of high-level delegates with exhibitors and OEMs.

The event was managed by Pakistan’s leading event management company Badar Expo Solutions. The event received an overwhelming response from across the globe. A total of 56 nations were represented in IDEAS – 2014 in the form of Foreign Delegations and International Exhibitors. 88 Delegations representing 50 nations attended IDEAS – 2014 including 47 high-level delegations headed either by their Defence Ministers, Secretaries, or Services Chiefs of the respective countries. A total of 333 companies (256 foreign and 77 local) exhibited their products during the exhibition.
