Downpours leave over 100 dead as MET Department predicts more rains

Lahore / Islamabad : Pakistan is facing huge flood these days. MET Department had predicted heavy rains last week and warned the public at large to avoid going into nullahs and in downstream areas to avoid any untoward incidents . However , MET Department ‘s warning was not so severe that could hint at such a devastating cloud bursts in the Punjab’s many areas and loss of human lives , the people’s properties and animals.

As per NDMA reports , the Punjab ‘s cities including Chakwal , Rawalpindi and federal area of Islamabad had record rains between Wednesday and Thursday. During these two days, heavy downpour turned these areas into water ponds, nullahs and rivers overflowed , killing more than 134 people in just last 24 hours. The flood waters have damaged houses and crops massively in many districts of the Punjab and Khyber Pukhtunkhaw (KPk), besides killing animals which swept away in flood waters.

Many small dams also swept away in Chakwal , worst hit district of the Punjab where 450 mm rain was recorded in the last two days .

Since MET Department has predicted more heavy downpour in the next couple of days, the Punjab government has imposed Section 144 to keep the public away from those areas which could submerge as a result of more rains .

The Punjab government has also declared rain emergency and put all aiding agencies on high alert to protect the people in those areas which are likely to be hit by flood waters. In flood waters hit areas of Pakistan , the army have also been called out to rescue the people.

The army units are joining 1122 and other rescue teams to evacuate the people from the flood hit areas of Pakistan.

In some videos , the army have been seen using helicopters to rescue the people in badly hit areas of Pakistan.

Prime minister , Shahbaz Sharif , also visited NDMA in Islamabad on Thursday to get briefing from ita authorities on the latest situation arising in the country after record rains in the last 48 hours. He also spoke to the media from NDMA crisis control room . He said Pakistan is facing hardships due to heavy downpours and this situation may last in the coming days also . He, however , noted that all rescue departments were working in uni some to help the people hit by flood.

Meanwhile , MET Department has predicted heavy rains in Sindh in the next 48 hours.
