Govt picks up Jameel Ahmad as SBP chief

ISLAMABAD : August 19,2022. The federal government on Friday appointed Jameel Ahmad as governor State Bank of Pakistan (SBP.

On the advice of the prime minister president Dr Arif Alvi, signed the summary for appointment of Mr Jameel Ahmad as full time governor of the central Bank.

The post of governor SBP was lying vacant after retirement of Raza Baqar as central bank since May 19, 2022 .

Since May Dr Murtaza Syed , who was serving with SBP as deputy governor .

Dr Murtaza Syed did a good job as acting governor SBP and took a number of bold decisions.

He was also among those six short listed experienced bankers who were interviewed by the federal government for appointment of the governor central bank.

Newly appointed governor , Mr Jameel Ahmad, was also interviewed for the post

The federal government had picked up Mr Jameel for top post of the SBP for keeping in view his three decades experience in senior positions in the central banks.

Jameel Ahmad ‘s profile on the website suggests , the new governor brings with him 30 years experience as senior banker. Mr Jameel Ahmad worked with Saudi central bank as its chief. He also has long experience to work with SBP at key positions.

As governor SBP will be confronting a number of teasing challenges like making the central bank a vibrent regulator of Pakistan ‘s banking sector .

He as chief of the central bank will be also required to address issues of Pakistan’s banking related areas.

SBP being an autonomous regulator is also supposed to take measures to ensure that banks do not take undue benefits of any regulation and at the same it is supposed to take action to stabilize the local currency.

Soon after taking over as central bank’s chief, Jameel Ahmad will be announcing the first monetory policy on August 22,2022.
