“Icon of the seas”, Setting sail as world largest cruise

Miami, FL- July 5,2023: The highly anticipated “Icon of the Seas,” the world’s largest cruise ship, is preparing to embark on its maiden voyage in January 2024. Manufactured in Finland by Royal Caribbean International, this magnificent vessel is set to revolutionize the cruise industry with its impressive size and innovative features.

With a gross tonnage of 250,800, the Icon of the Seas surpasses all other cruise ships, including the legendary Titanic, making it a true marvel of modern engineering. By comparison, the Titanic weighed a mere 50,210 tons, illustrating the tremendous progress that has been made in shipbuilding over the past century.

This state-of-the-art ship is powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), highlighting Royal Caribbean’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

Equipped with six multi-fuel Wärtsilä engines generating 67,500 kW (90,520 hp) of power, the Icon of the Seas offers both performance and eco-consciousness. These engines can operate on either LNG or distillate fuel, ensuring flexibility and reducing emissions. Additionally, the ship incorporates alternative energy features, such as fuel cells that produce electricity and fresh water. Royal Caribbean takes pride in being the first cruise line to introduce such advanced technology on board.

Accommodating 5,610 passengers at double occupancy or a maximum capacity of 7,600 passengers, the Icon of the Seas promises an unparalleled experience. Spread across 20 decks, the ship boasts an impressive array of amenities, including seven swimming pools, six water slides, and the first-ever suspended infinity pool on a cruise ship. Royal Caribbean proudly claims that this vessel holds records for the tallest waterfall, the tallest water slide, and the largest waterpark among all ships.

The journey of the Icon of the Seas began with the announcement of Royal Caribbean’s order for two ships under the project name “Icon” in October 2016. While the second ship is expected to be delivered in 2025, the lead ship will commence its service from the Port of Miami in early 2024. The vessel’s construction has been meticulously supervised, with steel-cutting commencing in June 2021 and the keel being laid in April 2022.

The comparison between the Icon of the Seas and the ill-fated Titanic serves as a testament to the leaps and bounds made in shipbuilding. The Icon of the Seas is five times larger and heavier than the Titanic, epitomizing the advancements in technology and design. Moreover, while the Titanic relied on coal as its primary fuel source, the Icon of the Seas uses cleaner and more efficient LNG, reflecting the industry’s commitment to sustainability.

Following successful sea trials, which concluded on June 22, 2023, the Icon of the Seas has returned to the Meyer Turku shipyard for final adjustments and the completion of its interior spaces. As the finishing touches are applied, anticipation continues to build for the grand unveiling of this groundbreaking vessel.

The Icon of the Seas sets a new standard for the cruising world, combining size, luxury, and sustainability. As it prepares to embark on its maiden voyage, passengers eagerly await the opportunity to explore the vast wonders and innovative features of this extraordinary ship. Royal Caribbean International’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of the cruise industry is evident in this remarkable achievement, and the Icon of the Seas is sure to leave an indelible mark on maritime history.
