NEW DELHI, November 9, 2024: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially informed the International Cricket Council (ICC) that India will not participate in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, to be started in Pakistan from February 19.
This marks the first time in nearly 30 years that Pakistan will host a major ICC event, but with just three months left before the tournament, India’s decision has raised concerns about the event’s preparation and logistics.
According to reports, the BCCI’s decision was made following advice from the Indian government, which recommended against sending the national cricket team to Pakistan.
However, the precise nature of the communication between the BCCI and ICC remains unclear, with sources suggesting the notification may have been informal.
The ICC is now awaiting a formal written confirmation from the BCCI before informing the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) of India’s stance.
PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has responded strongly to the situation, stating that the refusal must be communicated officially. “If there are issues, they should be provided in writing,” Naqvi said during a press conference at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium.
Naqvi also hinted that Pakistan may reconsider future tours to India if political and logistical challenges persist, referencing Pakistan’s participation in the 2023 ODI World Cup in India despite strained relations between the two countries.
The absence of India from the Champions Trophy poses a significant challenge for the ICC in ensuring the full participation of all eight competing teams: Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, and South Africa.
To address this issue, the ICC has reportedly considered adopting a hybrid model similar to the one used during the 2023 Asia Cup, where India’s matches were held in Sri Lanka instead of Pakistan.
However, the PCB has rejected this proposal, with Naqvi insisting that discussions on any alternative formats can only take place once formal communication is received from the ICC or BCCI.
With the tournament fast approaching, it remains to be seen how the ICC will navigate this delicate situation and whether the event will proceed as planned or face major changes. Both the ICC and PCB have yet to release official statements, though ongoing discussions are reportedly underway.
