Mohammad Nazir Junior, Pakistan’s Historic Spin Bowler and Umpire, Dies at 78

 

LAHORE, November 21, 2024: Mohammad Nazir Junior, the former Pakistan cricketer and respected umpire, passed away at the age of 78.

Nazir, celebrated for his skillful spin bowling, represented Pakistan in 14 Test matches and four One Day Internationals (ODIs), taking 37 wickets in total.

One of his standout achievements came during his debut Test, where he made history by becoming the first spinner to claim seven wickets in the first innings, a remarkable milestone that remains a high point of his career.

After retiring from playing, Nazir Junior made a successful transition into umpiring, officiating in 15 ODIs and five Test matches.

His deep knowledge of the game and his commitment to mentoring young talent earned him widespread respect within the cricketing world. Nazir had been critically ill for the past week, receiving treatment in a private hospital before his passing.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman, Mohsin Naqvi, expressed his condolences, paying tribute to Nazir’s invaluable contributions to cricket.

He offered sympathy to Nazir Junior’s family, stating, “May Allah Almighty rest the soul of the deceased and grant patience to the bereaved family, Amen.” His death is a great loss to Pakistan’s cricket community.
