Ganeva: Jan 9,2023: Pakistan has received positive response for its call given at a conference held in Geneva on January 9,2023 for seeking financial help from the world for its 2022 flood recovery.
Pakistan has received pledges of over $ 10 billion dollar in the first preliminary session held in Geneva , Switzerland for raising funds for last year’s flood affected.
On the call of Pakistan, the world has moved quickly . Pakistan ‘s two major international development partners –Islamic Development Bank (IDB) and World Bank have pledged $ 6.2 billion for rehabilitation of flood affectees .
Saudi Arabia which always remains helping hand for Pakistan in odds also pledged $ 1 billion for flood recovery.
A deadly flood had battered major portion of Pakistan in 2022 and damaged its infrastructure including roads, bridges , rail networks , water storage facilities, besides eroding standing seasonal crops of worth billions of dollars, killing animals in large numbers and causing human loss as well. Sindh was the worse hit province . Pakistan ‘s estimates suggest that last year deadly flood caused loss of $ 30 billion to its economy , besides leaving 33 million families shelterless.
United Nations had given an SoS to the world community to help Pakistan rehabilitate flood affectees, besides providing its financial support for addressing the infrastructure related issues . Pakistan has given a call for getting $ 16.4 billion in Geneva moot.
Information minister , Maryam Aurangzeb , tweeted after the first session of Geneva conference that Pakistan has received huge response from the world community as the donor’s and world community pledged $ 9 billion for Pakistan’s flood affectees and its expecting more pledges in the other sessions to be held in next 24 hours in Geneva .
Prime minister , Shahbaz Sharif , who is presiding over sessions of Geneva moot , has assured to the world that transparency in utilisation of pledged money for flood affectees is Pakistan’s top priority.
