Pakistan identifies six routes for Iran’s imports as shipments pileup at ports

Authorities direct concerned ministries to clear Iran's shipments via land routes on top priority

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan is preparing for a major logistics operation as the National Logistics Corporation (NLC) plans to transport around 3,000 Iranian transshipment containers from its ports to Iran by road.

According to official communication from its headquarters in Rawalpindi, these containers, originally destined for Iran, were diverted to Karachi and Gwadar ports due to logistical and operational reasons. To ensure timely delivery, authorities are considering overland routes through Gabd–Rimdan and Taftan–Mirjaveh border crossings.

The scale and urgency of the move require coordination between the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, Ministry of Commerce, and Federal Board of Revenue. Proposals under discussion include allowing cross-stuffing of containers, amending customs rules, extending free days at ports, and implementing the Pakistan-Iran Transit Trade Agreement (2008), along with developing a new transit framework similar to regional trade agreements. If approved, this move could strengthen Pakistan’s position as a regional trade corridor and enhance economic ties with Iran.
