Pakistan Makes VPN Registration Mandatory for Banks, Freelancers

Islamabad, (Newsman): The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has introduced new regulations that require the registration of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) for various sectors, including banks, embassies, IT firms, software houses, and freelancers.

This move is aimed at strengthening data security and ensuring uninterrupted internet access for businesses and individuals across the country.

The decision is part of a wider initiative to enhance the security and regulation of online activities in Pakistan. A recent consultation meeting in Islamabad brought together representatives from several government ministries, including the Ministry of IT, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the State Bank of Pakistan.

Key figures from the private sector, such as the CEO of the Pakistan Software Export Board, the chairman of the Pakistan Software House Association (Pasha), and the CEO of the Pakistan Freelancers Association, also participated in the discussions.

The primary focus of the meeting was to review the process of VPN registration and its importance in securing digital communications and transactions. The PTA highlighted that the registration will help safeguard sensitive data, ensure reliable internet connectivity for businesses, and prevent disruptions in critical services.

However, the Pakistan Software House Association (Pasha) voiced concerns about the tight timeline for implementation, particularly for unregistered VPNs.

The association called for more time to engage with stakeholders and facilitate a smooth transition, emphasizing that an extended period would be essential for compliance and minimizing any operational disruptions.

In response, the PTA acknowledged the need for continuous refinement of the VPN registration process and assured stakeholders that their feedback would be taken into account.

While the new regulations are now mandatory for the specified sectors, the PTA stressed that the registration process would be designed to meet the needs of businesses while maintaining a secure and stable online environment.
