PDM rejects new legislation: calls it unconstitutional

Opposition march on Islamabad

ISLAMABAD: A Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) meeting held here on Tuesday rejected legislation passed by the last joint sitting of the parliament and decided to challenge it in the court of law.
The meeting unanimously decided to press the audio scandal involving former Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP), Saqib Nisar. The meeting was of the view that PDM should make a case in public on the issue.
PDM meeting was attended by all top leaders of the parties participating in the alliance .
Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PMLN) senior vice president, Maryam Nawaz, attended the meeting via skyp from Lahore.
The meeting also discussed the proposal to resign from the assemblies when PDM completes its first phase of public mobilisation through processions, rallies and public gatherings in larger cities across Pakistan and finally march on Islamabad.
After the meeting, PDM chief, Maulana Fazalur Rehman , spoke to the media on the decisions taken in PDM meeting. He said PDM has placed its all decisions before the people of Pakistan. He said PDM rejects legislation passed by the joint sitting of the parliament as it was unconstitutoinal. Maulana Fazalur Rehman said the Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf (PTI) has turned the parliament into a rubber stamp by getting passed 35 bills in a few hours. He quoted the article 70 of the constitution to support PDM arguments that the legislation passed by the last joint sitting had no legal and constitutional value. He also criticised the government for what he called making State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) a branch of the International Monetory Fund (IMF). He said PDM will not allow the government to harass the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). PDM chief called overseas Pakistanis a great national asset and urged them that they should not come into the trap of the PTI government in the name of voting right.
