AML chief to be produced in court today

RAWALPINDI: Jan 16: Awami Muslim League (AML) chief Shaikh Rashid Ahmad was arrested here on Tuesday after an anti terrorist court (ATC) rejected his bail plea in connection with May 9 riots case.

Shaikh Rashid Ahmad, who was considered very close political aide to Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf (PTI) founding chairman Imran Khan, is accused of involving in a conspiracy hatched to target the military installing in the case Imran Khan was arrested while running an anti establishment campaign in Pakistan.

Shaikh Rashid Ahmad had denied these allegations in his televised interview some months ago. Shaikh Rashid Ahmad was arrested in May 9 riots case early last year. He, however, was released on bail by the anti terrorist court in Rawalpindi.

Shaikh Rashid Ahmad had claimed in his one of the interviews that he had no involvement in any conspiracy to target military installations in any case. He had also announced that he is loyal to Pak army which he dubbed as the best army in the world . AML chief had distanced himself from PTI’s Imran Khan and announced to contest February elections from NA 56 and NA 57 Rawalpindi on AWL tickets. Since Shaikh Rashid Ahmed was no more close political aide to Imran Khan, PTI has also launched its candidates against Shaikh Rashid Ahmad in NA 56 and NA 57 Rawalpindi.

A day earlier , Shaikh Rashid Ahmad had announced that in case he is arrested in May 9 vandalism case, he will contest February 8 elections from jail.
Shaikh Rashid Ahmad had appeared before the anti terrorism court (ATC) of judge Malik Asif Ejaz for confirmation of his bail. On rejection of his bail plea by the court, the police arrested him outside the court room.

Shaikh Rashid Ahmad’s lawyer Sardar Abdul Razak Khan has confirmed that AML chief is detained in New Town police station in Rawalpindi and he will be produced in the court for remand on Wednesday.
