SPC issues warning over ‘MISLEADING’ advertisements regarding opening of medical stores by pharmacy technicians

Karachi : In an announcement Sindh Pharmacy Council (SPC) has issued a warning to the advertisements appearing in the section of press and at some places claiming that pharmacy technicians can open up medical stores in Sindh.

SPC ‘s warning said it has come to the notice of the Pharmacy Council of Sindh that certain Pharmacy Technician Institutes are allegedly misleading students and the general public through advertisements, social media posts, counseling sessions, and other promotional materials by claiming that Pharmacy Technicians are eligible to open medical stores or act as Qualified Persons for drug sale licenses in Sindh Province.

In this regard, it is categorically clarified that as per the Sindh Drug Rules, only a registered Pharmacist (Category-A) is recognized as a ‘Qualified Person’ for the purpose of obtaining and operating a Drug Sale / Medical Store License in Sindh Province.It added that Pharmacy Technicians are NOT authorized to independently open, supervise, or act as the Qualified Person for a medical store or pharmacy in Sindh.

It clarified that any claim, advertisement, or assurance suggesting otherwise is false, misleading, and contrary to the prevailing drug laws and regulatory framework of Sindh Province.
All Pharmacy Technician Institutes are hereby directed to immediately cease and desist from issuing or circulating any misleading advertisements, claims, or statements suggesting that Pharmacy Technicians can open medical stores or obtain drug licenses in Sindh;
• Ensure that students are correctly informed about the legal scope of practice of Pharmacy Technicians; and
• Align all promotional and academic communications strictly with applicable laws and regulations.

Please note that non-compliance with this circular may result in reporting of the institute to the relevant regulatory and government authorities, initiation of legal and disciplinary action under applicable laws; and any other action deemed appropriate by the competent authority.

It also noted that this circular is issued in the public interest to prevent misinformation and to ensure compliance with the drug regulatory framework of Sindh Province.
