ISLAMABAD, October 22,24: The Special Parliamentary Committee (SPC) constituted to nominate the next Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) from among the three most senior judges of the Supreme Court is scheduled to meet on Tuesday.
Under the seniority principle, Justice Mansoor Ali Shah was initially expected to ascend to the position of CJP. However, recent changes introduced by the 26th Constitutional Amendment have revised the appointment process.
Now, the CJP will be appointed based on the recommendation of the SPC rather than directly by the president.
The SPC, formed just a day ago by National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, consists of eight Members of the National Assembly (MNAs) and four senators, representing various political parties according to their strength in parliament.
The committee includes PML-N members Khawaja Asif, Ahsan Iqbal, Shaista Pervaiz Malik, and Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar; PPP representatives Raja Pervez Ashraf, Naveed Qamar, and Senator Farooq H. Naek; Hamid Raza from the Sunni Ittehad Council; PTI-affiliated MNA Gohar Khan and Senator Ali Zafar; Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan MNA Rana Ansar; and Senator Kamran Murtaza from Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl.
