Tony Todd, Iconic Actor Known for ‘Candyman,’ Dies at 69

Tony Todd, the renowned horror actor best known for his roles in Final Destination and Candyman, dies at 69.

On November 6, Tony Todd, the actor known for his terrifying appearances in horror movies, died in Los Angeles at the age of 69.

Todd’s career included over 240 movie credits over 40 years, and he is most known for playing the hook-handed killer in “Candyman” and for his recurring parts in the “Final Destination” series. Although the cause of his death was not revealed, his representatives confirmed it to Deadline.

Todd, born on December 4, 1954, in Washington, D.C., received acting training at Trinity Rep Conservatory and the Eugene O’Neill National Actors Theatre Institute, where he honed his compelling on-screen persona.

Sergeant Warren in the Oscar-winning film “Platoon” was one of Todd’s early prominent performances. After that, Todd established himself as a mainstay on television in the 1980s and 1990s, making cameos on shows including “21 Jump Street,” “The X-Files,” “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” and “NYPD Blue.”

In addition, he played regular parts on “The Young and the Restless,” such as Gus Rogan.

Todd’s most memorable role was in 1992’s “Candyman,” in which he portrayed Daniel Robitaille, an angry ghost with a terrible background. He returned to the role in the Nia DaCosta-directed sequel in 2021.

Because of his famous and dreaded performance, he had roles in several horror films, such as William Bludworth in “Final Destination.” In a 2022 Deadline interview, Todd described his methodology, stressing the value of giving his characters backstories to combine terror with pity.

Todd continued to perform in movies, TV shows, and video games throughout the twenty-first century, including “Chuck,” “Dead of Summer,” and “Scream.” As a voice actor, he contributed to ‘Transformers Prime’ and ‘Call of Duty.’
