PESHAWAR- The new Peshawar police chief, Mohammad Ijaz Khan, has been posted at a time when Peshawar is badly crime infested. From street crime to heinous ones, all exist. They happen but not reflected in first information reports (FIRs) as former chief city police office (CCPO), Abbass Ahsan, was in favor of burking. He thought only figures matter, but that is not the case. The complaints of increasing corruption in police, taking huge bribes in transfers of depuity police officers (DSPs), Station Head Officers (SHOs) and Muharrar have been in all circles. Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) had advised Abbas Ahsan not to stoop low and indulge in corruption, but despite repeated advice, when the Chief Minister realized that corruption was on the rise in the police department, he asked inspector general police (IGP) Moazzam Jah who has deputed his most trusted police officer Ijaz Khan to be posted as CCPO Peshawar to lead.. Muhammad Ijaz Khan hails from Mohmand Agency and he demonstrated excellent performance since his start of career as SDPO Taxila, later FIA, Peshawar, Kohat, Malakand and Special Branch are witness of his professional competence and honesty. He joined Police on 18 February 2000. Provincial intelligence agencies such as the Special Branch of Police and DSBs have regained their lost ground after he introduced reforms in them. In a recent survey conducted on social media about the high performance of DIGs in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police, Ijaz Khan was number one among the people’s favorite officers. Considering his best abilities, he was given important responsibilities of CCPO Peshawar. Ijaz Khan will face many difficulties in Peshawar. These include poor investigation system, bribery, non-registration of FIRs, postings of incompetent and corrupt police officers in circles and police stations. Before the transfer of Ijaz Khan, bids were made at police stations in Peshawar. All routes within the boundaries of Cantt, Pishtakhara, Town and Hayatabad were opened for smugglers. Under the former CCPO, the Customs, ANF and Excise and Taxation departments continued to outperform then police, while the Peshawar Police performed zero. Public and social circles have appreciated the appointment of Muhammad Ijaz Khan as Peshawar Police Chief and expressed hope that Ijaz Khan would put an end to all the irregularities and irregularities that took place during the tenure of the former CCPO.
