Journalist Arshad Sharif murder in Kenya ; Special JIT to probe case

ISLAMABAD : Dec 8,2022: On the directions of the Supreme Court of Pakistan (SCP) ,Inspector general Police Islamabad (IGP) , Akbar Nasir Khan , has constituted a 5-member special joint investigation team (JIT) to probe killing of journalist Arshad Sharif .

The capital police chief, Ahmad Awais, would be convener of the JIT. Its other members included Syed Waqar ur din from Federal Investigation Agency (FIA)
Mr Aslam of Inter Services Intelligence (ISI), Fiaz from military intelligence (MI), SSP investigation Islamabad and
Inspector Mohamad Shahbaz of Islamabad will assist the JIT .

The SCP had ordered the government to constitute a special high powered JIT having honest and credible repute in their respective departments .

The 5-member bench of the SCP resumed hearing into Arshad Sharif murder case on Thursday. Chief justice , Umar Atta Bandial, is heading the bench which heard the case on daily basis.

On the demand of the victim family, SCP had taken suo moto notice of the case.

During the hearing of the case on Thursday, the bench ruled that the special JIT should work hard to reach to the bottom of the case as it involves henous murder of Arshad Sharif , a renowned journalist of Pakistan.

Chief justice observed that the court wanted to ensure that the JIT makes independent investigations in the killing of the journalist Arshad Sharif.

The apex court was informed that the government was in contact with Kenyan government to get update on investigations being conducted in this case in that country. The court was also informed that the government will use legal channels available between Kenya and Pakistan for reaching out to any character of the case .

During the hearing the court ordered to the special JIT to submit its progress report on fortnightly basis. The court also ordered to the government to assist the special JIT to provide funds to travel abroad for investigations , besides providing it staff and other facilities in Pakistan.

The special JIT has been asked to approach to the top court if its work was hindered by any individual , group or department.
