Govt increases levy to deprive public of relief in petrol prices

Maryam Nawaz criticised decision of Shahbaz govt

ISLAMABAD . August 15,2022. On Monday , Shahbaz government not only deprived the commuters of relief as the rates in global market have gone down substantially , but also added more burden on them by increasing the rates of petrol and high speed diesel.

The rates of crude oil have gone down to $ 94.89 a barrel from over $111 a barrel in last one month, but the government in Pakistan is not passing on benefit of reduced prices to its people. It, on the other hand , is increasing levy on petroleum products even more than what benefit the people should have got in rates of petrol.

The commuters were waiting substantial relief, but around mid night Finance Division announced to increase petrol prices by Rs 6.72 a liter , taking its new rates to Rs 233.91 per liter. Similarly , rates of light diesel were also increased by Rs 0.43 , taking its new rates to Rs 191.75 a liter .

On the direction of prime minister , Shahbaz Sharif, Finance ministry decided to increase levy on petrol and diesel . Levy on petrol was increased from Rs 20 to Rs 27 and likewise levy on diesel was also increased from Rs 10 to Rs 17 per liter.

Kerosin rates were decreased by Rs 1.67 per liter. Its new price would be Rs 191.76.

Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PMLN) vice president , Maryam Nawaz , criticised her uncle’s government decision of depriving the people of relief by not passing on benefit of reduced oil prices in global market to them.

She rushed to tweet after mid night to question as to why the government put the people in disappointment by not reducing prices of petroleum products when their rates have gone down in global market. She said ” I stand with the people on this issue”.
