Two labourers dead, three injured as under -construction Bhara Kahu bridge collapses

Police say rescue work at site underway. Loss of lives feared

ISLAMABAD: Feb 25,2033: A massive incident occured at Bahara Kahu under- construction bridge when one main portion of the project collapsed, trapping the labourers under the rubbles early morning on Saturday.

According to the details , two labourers died and three others injured in the incident.

Mohammad Yousaf , a police officer on duty of Bahar Kahu police station, told NEWSMAN that the incident took place at around 8.15 AM when the labourers of the contractor were busy in work at the Bhara Kahu bridge project in Islamabad.

According to the police , several labourers had trapped under the rubbles of the collapsed portion of the bridge and the efforts were underway for their rescue.

The police officer said Rescue 1122 and other teams are busy in rescue work at the site of incident.

The rescue teams have recovered three injured labourers from the rubbles so far and rushed them to the nearby hospital for treatment. The police officer fears loss of lives in the incident.

Collapse of a portion of an under- construction bridge at Bhara Kahu is a big question on the standard of work at the project is a big question on the credibility of the Capital Development Authority (CDA).

The CDA awarded the project to the National Logistic Cell (NLC) which sublet it to a private contractor .

CDA hardly takes care of any development projects as its officials of the concerned departments keep their focus on personal gains rather giving priority to check the quality of works at new projects. Collapse of a mega development project of CDA today is its ample proof.

In such incidents these are the labourers who become victim and their families suffer for life long as they do not get any compensation of the loss.

It should be a responsability of the state to ensure that the labourers have legal protection in the case of any mishap. The state should also ensure that in the case of the loss of lives the families of the victims get compensation and amount of compensation should be at least Rs 15 to Rs 20 million so that the victims families could make livings for some reasonable time.

Tahir Dindsa , an Islamabad based senior journalist , who lives in the.vicity of Bahara Kahu while giving the account of the incident said the incident of collapse of a major portion of the Bahara Kahu bridge project took place due to improper safety measures taken for the labourers who were busy in the work at the site of incident.

“It’s irony that there is no implemention of the laws of compensation for the labourers in Pakistan who are real son of the soil”, Tahir Dindsa deplored.

He added that the government should implement th e laws for compensation to the families of the labourers in the case of any such incidents.
