Amidst terror attacks , Pakistan go for elections today

Borders with Iran, Afghanistan closed for security reasons

Islamabad : Feb 7,2024 : Amidst deadly terrorist attacks , Pakistan is going for election 2024 today (Thursday). Pakistanis will vote for electing their representatives to run the country for a term of five years .

Pakistan ‘s 128. 585 million voters are eligible to use their right of vote for the national assembly and four provincial assemblies . Pakistan has 855 seats of the national assembly and provincial assemblies. For Punjab assembly 6710 candidates are in the contest. Pakistan’s 44% voters are young and in the range of 22 to 40 years of age.

According to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) , young voters percentage has increased from 18 % in 2018 election to 22% in 2024 election . The active participation of young voters in the voting process will play a key role in winning of any political parties. Almost all political parties including Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PMLN) , Pakistan People Party (PPP) , Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf (PTI) and even religious- cum political -parties have focused on young voters in their election campaigns. Since Pakistan is holding elections 2024 in the most difficult environment of it’s history , the outcome of these elections will have far reaching impact on Pakistan’s future. Since launching of election campaign by the political parties some two months ago, the terrorists are targeting political leaders and their supporters to create an environment of terror across Pakistan.

To meet the security challenge on the elections day, Pakistan has put its security forces on high alert . The army troops have been called in to assist the civil government and ensure security to the elections staff , voters and public at large .

Meanwhile , Pakistan ‘s Foreign Office on Wednesday issued a notification to suspend all kinds of traffic and cross- border movement with Iran and Afghanistan. The official announcement said the borders with Iran and Afghanistan have been closed for all types of movements for the security reasons on the elections day in Pakistan.
