Thatta: Awaz Foundation Pakistan and its partner Sindh Radiant Organization (SRO) of district Thatta extended most sincere appreciation to the anti-terrorism court of Lahore for handing death sentence to Abid Malhi and Shafqat Ali alias Bagga for raping a woman on the Lahore-Sialkot motorway last year.
The decision of the court announced on March 20 to punish the convicts with life imprisonment under the charges of abduction and 14- year imprisonment to each accused under the charges of robbery is quite just.
The court also imposed Rs200,000 fine each. However, Awaz Foundation Pakistan on behalf of civil society organizations demands of the government to ensure legislation at provincials’ level to end these crimes against women and children.
It is hoped that the decisions like these will help lessen crime like these against women and children in the country while creating a safer environment for them to live.
Pakistan is considered the 6th most dangerous country for women. Therefore, we are hopeful that the present government will take further actions and ensure all survivors of rape have access to justice through further strengthening and empowering the institutions to make our society a livable place for women.
