ISLAMABAD; Jahangir Tareen was not a common party guy since his joining in Pakistan Tehreek -e- Insaf (PTI) a decade ago. Before joining PTI in 2011, Tahreen had been a vibrant leader of many other main piliticial parties. He was once a close and trusted guy of Chaudharys of Gujrat when he was in Pakistan Muslim League Quaid (PML-Q). He had good relationship with Mian Brothers for multi dimensional businesses
He held different important positions at federal and provincial levels during his political carear stretching over 2 decades. He used his intellect to judge the direction of the wind and go with it in times since entering into national politics in 2002. He never did a game of loss in his political carear.
If you take him as a darling of almost all mainstream political parties at times you may not be wrong. You can call this a nice looking now grey hair man from Lodhran as a man of all weathers.
But nature has its own system. You never know when your only one move could prove fatal for you.
The same Tareen who as a shrewed man always made right move and jumped out of sinking ships of different governments caught in trouble in PTI. He terriblly misjudged Imran Khan. Like always he got closer to cricketer-turned politician Imran Khan (IK) and earned the label of his ATM for putting all financial reaources at his disposal. Every Tom and Jerry in this country knows how Tareen spent money on PTI. He was a main financer of PTI for years. Imran Khan used his Cessna aeroplane on air and V 8s on ground. His entire party was free to stay and din at any 5 star hotel across Pakistan at anytime and anywhere. The entire party main leadership had to sign a bill and leave hotel with grace without payment. It was Tareen who was to pay for them. So much so he paid to Reham Khan as deal money when she threatened to go public against Imran Khan after seperation from him in 2018.
Tareen’s bad days started with having soar relations with Asad Umar. Both (Tareen and Asad) were in a bid to outclass each other to get lucrative position in the federal cabinet since 2018.
Since Tareen had an edge of financial resources over Asad Umar he went off the pitch to attack Asad Umar in media in 2019 for his decision as Finance minister of letting the rupee fall against US dollar freely. His open trial of Asad Umar proved counterproductive as Asad wrapped him up in sugar export subsidy case and managed to convince Imran Khan that Tareen’s role in sugar export scam was bringing bad name to him and PTI and it would be a wise decision to sideline him from the party position.
Tareen finally lost his position in the party and so his magnet . Sugar which was his strength became his weakness. An anti lobby within the party had managed to create rift between IK and Tareen. Seeing bad times ahead, Tareen left Pakistan for United Kingdom last year. Many informed political anaylists in Islamabad argue that Tareen’s sojourn of UK did not help him politically as he could not meet PMLN supremo, Mian Nawaz Sharif, in London to make another sharp move to save hIs political carear.
Tareen’s camp, however, disagree to this claim. It argues that Tareen went to UK for medical tests and came back when they were done.
However, Tareen made another risky move by becoming a party to election campaign team for his close relative, Yousaf Raza Gillani, for top slot of the upper house.
Sources said on getting information that Jahangir Tareen was campaigning for Yousaf Raza Gillani for Senate chairman election, Prime Minister, Imran Khan, got furious that ended up the chances of any patch up between the two.
Tareen’s new move has not only widended the gap of mistrust with IK but also put the former in trouble as it has led to unleashing of entire state machinery against him and his son Ali Tareen.
Tareen has left with only one option of the court of law to avoid his and his son’s arrest in sugar price scam.
“You see how Tareen and his son is being chased in sugar scandal its because of his role in campaign for Yousaf Raza Gillani in Senate poll” , said an informed source of NEWSMAN.
