Absence of Aleem Khan from misconduct privilege hearing irks Senate committee

Islamabad : February 3, 2026 : The Senate Standing Committee on Rules of Procedure and Privileges met today under the Chairmanship of Senator Syed Waqar Mehdi to consider amendments to Rule 209 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Senate, 2012, review the implementation status of the Committee’s recommendations regarding the quashing of FIRs against Quaid-e-Azam University (QAU) students, examine the assurance given by the Capital Development Authority (CDA) in the missing file case, and deliberate upon a privilege motion moved against the alleged misconduct of Mr. Abdul Aleem Khan, Federal Minister for Communications.

‎The meeting was attended by Senator Hafiz Abdul Karim, Senator Dost Ali Jeesar, Senator Palwasha Mohammad Zai Khan, and Senator Saadia Abbasi, while Senator Shahadat Awan participated as the mover.

‎The Committee thoroughly deliberated upon the proposed amendment to Rule 209. Following a no-objection conveyed by the relevant Ministry, the Committee unanimously approved the proposed amendment.

‎The Committee also received a briefing regarding its earlier directions for the withdrawal of FIRs lodged against students of Quaid-e-Azam University, Islamabad. The Vice Chancellor, QAU, informed the Committee that an application for withdrawal of the FIRs has been submitted before the relevant forums and will be processed shortly. He assured the Committee of the University administration’s commitment towards students’ welfare while ensuring discipline and a peaceful, education-friendly environment. After detailed deliberations, the Chairman disposed of the matter with directions to the SP City, Islamabad, to ensure that the FIRs are quashed through the appropriate legal forum.

‎Furthermore, the Committee reviewed the missing file case pertaining to House No. 622, I-10/4, in light of the report of the Senate Functional Committee on Government Assurances. The Committee was informed that the matter is sub judice; consequently, the Chairman deferred the agenda.

‎The Committee expressed displeasure over the absence of Mr. Abdul Aleem Khan, Federal Minister for Communications, against whom a privilege motion has been moved. On the suggestion of the mover of the privilege motion, Senator Palwasha Mohammad Zai Khan, and due to the absence of the concerned Minister, the Chairman deferred the agenda.
