SBP says it received $ 1.3 billion tranche from IMF

Karachi : The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) on Wednesday said International Monetary Fund (IMF) Executive Board had completed third review under the Extended Fund Facility (EFF) in its meeting held on 08 May 2026, and approved disbursement of SDR 760 million for Pakistan. Furthermore, the
IMF Executive Board has also approved disbursement of second tranche of SDR 154 million under the
Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF).
Accordingly, SBP has received SDR 914 million (equivalent to about US$ 1.3 billion) under the EFF and
RSF in value 12 May 2026 from the IMF.
The amount would be reflected in SBP’s foreign exchange reserves for the week ending on 15 May 2026.

Pakistan is now under IMF $7 billion EFF and RSF programme since 2024. IMF has already released two tranches to Pakistan under EFF and RSF programme. ,totalling $ 2.3 billion. With third installment, IMF disbursement to Pakistan under EFF and RSF programme stands at $ 4.4 billion of $7 billion programe.

Pakistan argues that IMF programme was pre- requisite for it to getting out of economic crisis. Keeping in mind the significance of IMF bailout package, Shahbaz government is continuously accepting those IMF demands which have hurt Pakistan’s economy more than its support.

Pakistan is a chronic client of IMF and keeps getting into its programme after some intervals. So far , Pakistan has gone through 16 IMF programmes , but despite these loan programmes completion , Pakistan is yet to exit from its economic crisis.
