Talks with Taliban were candid, professional: US says

ISLAMABAD: The United States on Monday said its talks with Taliban in Doha (Qatar) were candid and professional.

The international media quoted US officials, who were part of Washington team that held crucial talks with the official team of Taliban government in Doha , that these talks were extremely candid and professional.

A US high level delegation had talks with a representative team of Taliban government, headed by Afghan Foreign minister, in Doha Qatar last week on a number of thorny issues like safe passage for US citizens still trapped in Afghanistan and former Afghan facilitators who worked for US forces in Afghanistan.
These talks were the first in nature after Taliban’s take over in Afghanistan. The future of Afghan government is dependent on outcome of US approach on Taliban government. A positive outcome of Doha talks between US and Taliban officials can help Afghan government get out of the current mess. It can also pave way for Taliban government to hold talks with other international powers like European Union. Any such development can help Taliban government win recognition from important capitals of the world.

According to the media reports, US side stressed upon Afghan government team to gurantee safe and fast exit of remaining US citizens from Kabul, besides honouring its commitment to grant access to Afghan girls for education, besides protecting women righs of Afghan women in Afghanistan. These reports also said the US has hinted at providing humanitarian assistance for Afghanistan on emergency basis to avert looming human crisis in Afghanistan.

The Taliban government, the media report further said, called upon US to defreez Afghan accounts to give its government much- needed financial support.
Soon after take over of Taliban in Afghanistan, the US had freezed Afghanistan’s accounts having over one billion dollar. The release of freezed funds can help Afghanistan government overcome rising financial crisis in the war -torn country.
