What is Pukhtun Wali, it is a code of honour and commitment by which all Pukhtuns live and die. Only yesterday a family friend Honourable Tariq Akbar related an anecdote as how in 1962 my beloved late Aunty Begum Zari Sarfraz stood for elections when the Amir Muhammad Khan, the Nawab of Kala Bagh was the Governor West Pakistan, who was then ruling with an iron hand and no one could defy him.
Tariq related, It so happened that late Amir Afzal Khan went to my father Akbar Khan requesting him to vote for his sister which he could not not refuse as a Pukhtunwali, a Pukhtun code of honour. Nawab Kala Bagh had made another lady stand to oppose Begum Zari Sarfraz and directed all members to vote for her that my father refused to have given his words to the late Mir Afzal Khan, that infuriated the tyrant Governor.
As luck will have it, the candidate of Nawab of Kala Bagh lost to his rude shock. He once again summoned meeting of the members to tell then that the only honest man was Akbar Khan who had the audacity to honour his words and told me so on my face.
Late Khan of Mardan, Aziz Sarfraz Khan is lowered to his eternal abode amongst his family and ancestral friends, the old guards who still honour traditions and the Pukhtun code of honour. Rest in Peace.
