Controversial 26th amendment Bill rushes through Senate, National Assembly

Th Senate and National Assembly of Pakistan passes 26th Amendment Bill Amid controversy and delays

ISLAMABAD, October 20224: After the Senate , National Assembly of Pakistan has also passed the controversial constitutional amendment Bill 2024 for 26th amendment in the constitution.

The bill, once signed by the president, will become a law and forthwith implemented to empower the parliament to pick top judge of its choice. The parliament will also get the same powers to appoint the judges of the high courts of Pakistan.

Shahbaz led government has shown unnecessary haste to pass the bill in question. It did not even spare Sunday which is usually an off day for passing of any bill.

Unnecessary haste to get the bill makes the amendment in question mysterious. It also endorses doubts of Pakistan Tehreek w Insaf (PTI) that some subtle agenda is veiled in passing of 26th amendment.

After multiple delays and discussion, the Senate has approved the 26th Constitution Amendment Bill 2024, with 65 senators voting in favor of its 22 proposed clauses.

The bill, which includes key amendments such as the formalization of the chief justice’s term, is now set to move to the National Assembly for final approval.

Known as the “Constitutional Package,” the bill has been under discussion by a special parliamentary committee, which included representatives from all political parties, including the PTI.

The federal cabinet had already endorsed the bill earlier in the day, with the backing of the government’s coalition partners.

Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar presented the bill in the Senate, where it was debated by lawmakers before being voted on.

Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gilani announced the results of the vote, confirming that the bill had secured the two-thirds majority required for passage.

“Sixty-five members are in favor of the motion, and four are against,” Gilani stated, affirming that the bill had met the constitutional threshold for approval. The bill now awaits passage in the National Assembly to be enacted into law.
