6 dead, 14 injured in gas cylinder explosion in Jhelum

Officials say efforts underway for rescue of trapped under collapsed building

Jhelum : July 9,2023: At least 6 persons have died and 14 other injured in a gas explosion in a 3-storey building situated on the Grand Trunk (GT) road here.

The dead. bodies and injured were shifted to District Headquarters Hospital Jhelum . The officials said an emergency has been declared at District Headquarters Hospital Jhelum and doctors and pera medical staff have been called on duty to provide medical treatment to the injured.

Deputy Commissioner Jhelum, Samiullah Farooq, told the reporter that the rescue teams were making every possible effort to rescue those who were trapped under rubbles of the collapsed building and the operation will continue till rescue of the last trapped person. He said there were apprehensions that around five to six persons could be under the rubbles of the collapsed building .

According to Jhelum police , District Police Officer , Nasir Mahmood Bajwa, was monitoring rescue operation to ensure that those trapped or injured persons as a result of the gas explosion are rescued without any delay. The police added that all concerned departments of Jhelum district were actively engaged to complete rescue operation as early as possible.

Earlier , Additional Deputy Commissioner (Revenue), Jhelum, Hassan Tariq told media person that gas explosion took place at around 9.25 am in kitchen of a 3-storey building of a hotel situated at GT road that caused collapse of the entire building , trapping dozens of the people which included employees of the hotel and a few guests. He said the rescue teams have recovered 6 dead bodies which were shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital Jhelum .

A day before , a gas cylinder blast in passenger van in Balwal, Sargodha had left 8 dead and 10 injured . There have been a series of gas cylinder explosions in different cities of Punjab ,causing loss of human lives and properties, but there is none government authorities to take notice of these explosions and save lives of the people.
