‘Do n’t gag press’: opposition vows to resist PMDA

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PMLN) president and opposition leader in the national assembly, Mian Shahbaz sharif, warned the government not to go ahead with its plan to gag the press by formulating controversal Pakistan Media Development Authority (PMDA). He said any such attempt meant to deprieve the journalists community of its basic rights would be resisted at all levels.
Pakistan People Party (PPP) chairman, Bilawal Bhutto, announced that his party would challenge proposed Pakistan Media Development Authority (PMDA) in the court, which he termed as Draconian law being introduced to gag the press in Pakistan.
PMLN president, Mian Shahbaz Sharif and PPP chairman, Bilawal Bhutto were addressing to the journalists here who have gathered outside Parliament House to stage a sit -in against introduction of PMDA
The Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf (PTI) government has circulated a draft of the PMDA to which journalist orgsnisations are opposing.
Shahbaz Sharif and Bilawal Bhutto had joined the sit in to express solidarity with journalists. In his address , Bilawal Bhutto said PMDA was being introduced to deprieve the journalists of their right of freedom of speech. He said the new media law was also an attack on judiciary of the country
To a question, Bilawal Bhutto said he respects Maulana Fazal ur Rehman and also have good working relations with all opposition leaders including Mian Shahbaz Sharif.
Earlier, Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PMLN) spokesperson, Maryam Aurangzeb, also joined journalists sit in to express solidarity with them. Addressing the participants , Maryam Aurangzeb said PMLN opposes the new media law , which in her views was a martial law on journalism.
