ISLAMABAD : Jan 12 : The Senate of Pakistan has been moved through another resolution to defer the elections scheduled for February 8, 2024 Senator Hydiat ullah of independent parliamentary group moved a resolution in the upper house of Pakistan\s parliament on Friday seeking three month deferment in general elections.
The resolution highlights security situation in the country and calls up the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to postpone general elections for three months. The resolution quotes recent attacks on the political leaders of different political parties to stress upon its crux to seek deferment in February 8 elections. It said “ The ECP should ensure safety to the lives of those who are contesting elections and consider the resolution demanding delay of three months in holding general elections in the country”.
A few weeks ago, the Senate has adopted a resolution to postpone the February 8 elections on the same grounds.
The political parties had hurled sharp reaction to the previous resolution passed by only 12 members of the upper house. Some political parties including Pakistan People Party (PPP) had reprimanded their members who were present in the house at a time when the resolution was moved for delay in the general elections and later issued them show cause notices. With a gap of only two weeks, a similar move is made in the upper house for the same cause. This time independent parliamentary group is on the front foot to get the February 8 elections postponed.
The question as to why the Senate which is upper house of the parliament is making moves to create uncertainty about February 8 elections?. Another question which is mind boggling and adding confusion to already murkier scene of Pakistan’s politics as to who is behind the Senate members who are blocking the general elections scheduled for February 8, 2024.
The resolutions moved in the Senate seem a well-planned conspiracy to delay February 8, 2024
