Measles turning into an outbreak in Punjab

Unvaccinated children are 100 % prune to measles ; Dr Rai Asghar

Lahore : An official report of the Punjab Healthcare Department suggests that measles disease has taken a dangerous turn as number of its infected kids is spreading over the entire province . The Punjab Healthcare Department ‘s report indicates that measles is on the brink of outbreak in the province . According to the report , Lahore , Rahimyar Khan , Faisalabad are the worst affected districts of the Punjab province . Measles is an infectious disease caused by the Rubeola virus. Usually, it infects children under age 5 but can also occur in adults with compromised immune systems. It is a systemic infection; the virus enters and multiplies in the nose or throat and spreads to other organs of the body. The incubation period of the measles virus is 10-14 days. After infection, the virus incubates until the rashes appear on the body. The Punjab Healthcare Department reveals that more than two hundred measles cases have been reported from various districts of the province .

Pakistan is prune to measles . In 2021, 10,399 cases of measles were reported in Pakistan, whereas 2,747 were reported in 2020 (14). This is concerning in and of itself, but even more so when considering the possibility of missed diagnosis, which has become common in the wake of the pandemic’s disrupted surveillance systems.

In his professional opinion , Rawalpindi Medical University Dean Dr Rai Asghar said “All those children who are unvaccinated are at 100% risk to get measles infection. Children less than 9 months are also developing measles. That means their mothers have no immunity to pass on to the child”.
