KARACHI: The Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP), in collaboration with the Overseas Investors Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OICCI), held an awareness session on Competition Law with the business community and overseas investors in Karachi.
Ms. Bushra Naz Malik, Member CCP, led the session along with Ms. Marryum Pervaiz, Secretary to the Commission, and Ms. Maliha Quddus, Senior Joint Director.
The OICCI delegation was headed by Secretary General Mr. M. Abdul Aleem, who welcomed the CCP team and appreciated their outreach efforts.
In her remarks, Ms. Bushra Naz Malik highlighted the recent enforcement actions taken by the CCP in various sectors of the economy including public procurement, sugar, fan manufacturers, and flat steel manufacturers.
Ms. Marryum Pervaiz gave a presentation on key aspects of the Competition Act, 2010. She highlighted the CCP’s role in reviewing mergers and acquisitions, which helped facilitate PKR 42 billion in Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) over the past year.
Ms. Maliha Quddus highlighted the aspects of abuse of dominant position and prohibited agreements (cartelization).
Mr. Abdul Aleem emphasized the CCP’s role in ensuring fair competition and encouraging overseas investment in Pakistan. He also suggested holding more awareness sessions for the business community.
The session concluded with an interactive question and answer session where delegates, including representatives from the Pharma, FMCG, and Engineering sectors, engaged in a discussion focused on the scope of competition laws, tools for cartel detection, and the role of AI.
