Pakistan is lucky: all its citizens are equal when it comes to shouldering the debt its elites incur, convincing everyone it’s for the good of all. As the temperature rises, the heat of the plains drives hordes of tourists up to mountain destinations. My friend, Col. retired Khalid Chohan, pulled me out of bed for an unplanned visit to Malam Jabba.

We heard the good news that fuel prices had been revised downward substantially by the government. That was indeed a surprise. I thought it was a God-given opportunity for our cash-starved state machinery to cash in, fill their own coffers, and park the last penny earned safely overseas.

This collage speaks for itself: the equality among Pakistanis in sharing the debt burden, and the disparity in their privileges. In one frame is the 5-star Pearl Continental Hotel, while just opposite, a shanty house is being put together by an entire family working just to have shelter over their heads.

It was a shocking discovery that the Pearl Continental management, in their own pearls of wisdom, introduced a hefty entry fee, while those in local government services and their guests are accorded a red-carpet reception. Escort vehicles with hooting pilots make those riding in them shamelessly believe Pakistan was born to serve them alone.

No matter what one feels or writes, it’s like water off a duck’s back. No wonder that once one extends an arm for begging, it’s the conscience they bury first to inflate their egos through self-gratification.

Long live Pakistan, where wishes are the horses only beggars can ride, while others just keep their heads above the ocean of debt .
