Since its inception , the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has recovered Rs. 864 billion directly and indirectly. An official handout issued here on Sunday said NAB during chairman Justice (R) Javed Iqbal’s tenure , NAB has recovered Rs. 584 billion directly and indirectly. Due to vigorous prosecution of NAB, accountability courts have convicted 1405 accused persons, besides imposing heavy fines upon them. NAB has overall conviction ratio of 66 percent. Since its inception, NAB received a total of 405768 complaints and out of which 405212 complaints were disposed off as per the law.
Presently, scrutiny of 556 complaints was in progress. NAB has authorised verification of 100865 complaints and of which investigation of some 100425 complaints were processed . The handout added that investigations of 779 complaints were in progress. NAB has authorized 9883 inquiries and of which 8953 inquiries were taken to logical conclusion. It said 930 inquiries were being investigated. Since inception , NAB has authorized 4547 investigations and out of which 42100 investigation taken to logical conclusion and working on 346 investigations was in progress. NAB has filed 3645 references in accountability courts and of which 2,398 references were disposed off as per the law. Right now as many as 1237 references valuing Rs 1335 billion were under trial in different accountability courts, the hand out noted. NAB said
corruption is the root cause of all ills being confronted to the country. Justice Javed Iqbal after assuming the responsibilities of Chairman NAB devised an effective 3- pronged anti corruption strategy comprising awareness, prevention and enforcement, besides accountability for all policy. NAB chairman introduced various reforms in NAB which have yielding excellent results. NAB chairman and all the officers of NAB consider eradication of corruption as topmost priority. Furthermore, out of a total of 179 mega corruption cases some 93 references were under trial in different accountability court whereas 68 references have been disposed off. Currently, 9 inquiries and 9 investigations were near completion from out of 179 mega corruption cases.
Chairman reviewed the investigation officers workings and introduced a combine investigation team (CIT) system in order to benefit from the experience and collective wisdom of senior supervisory officers and to improve inquiries and investigations on the basis of solid evidence and documentary evidence. The handout said positive results of these have already started pouring in. The NAB has set a time limit of 10 months to complete the investigation, inquiry and investigation of complaints. It noted
business community plays important role in coutnry’s progress and prosperity. NAB chairman has established a special cell at NAB headquarters and regional offices for resolving the issues being confronted to business community. It claimed that business community lauded chairman for such initiatives. NAB chairman has also started a grading system for evaluating annual performance of officer’s performance. A comprehensive grading system was also started for evaluating performance of regional offices. NAB has started effective monitoring and evaluation system with the help of figures. Positive results were coming of these initiatives. NAB has received hundreds of applications in Modarba and Musharka scams.
NAB has filed 32 references in different accountability courts and of which some references have been decided in favour of NAB. NAB was striving hard to return the looted money in Modarba and Musharka scams. NAB has also recovered Rs 25 billion and returned to affectees of fake housing/ cooperative societies. The affectees thanked the chairman for recovering their looted money in honourable way. This fortifies the passion of NAB officers in recovering the looted money. NAB has established a digital forensic laboratory in Islamabad. The aim of establishing laboratory was to meet the needs of eradication of corruption from society. This saves precious time and improves standard of investigations. Laboratory has also helped keeping secrecy in investigations. NAB is also chairman of SAARC anti corruption forum which is big success. NAB is also focal institution of Pakistan under UNCAC. Which is honour for NAB. NAB has signed a MoU with China for taking benefits of mutual experiences. NAB is the only institute in world which has signed anti corruption agreement with China. Current Chairman believes in team work and NAB officers considered eradication of corruption as their national duty. NAB has no affiliation with any party, group of individual but with the state of Pakistan. Transparency International Pakistan, World Economic Forum, Global Peace Canada, PILDAT, Mashal Pakistan have also appreciated NAB’s efforts whereas as per Gilani & Gallup survey, 59 percent people have expressed confidence in the NAB. This fortifies their resolve of corruption eradication.
NAB led by Justice Javed Iqbal has termed eradication of corruption as top most priority of NAB as well as entire nation so that the dream of eradication of corruption could came true.
