Government, PTI Ready to Consider Fazlur Rehman as Mediator Amid Rising Political Tensio
ISLAMABAD – The government and Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf (PTI) have reportedly agreed in principle to consider Jamiat Ulema e Islam JUI (F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman as a mediator to help revive a dialogue process between the government and the opposition amid growing political tensions.
According to sources familiar with the developing situation, both the government and opposition have approached Maulana Fazlur Rehman and requested him to play a mediating role in facilitating negotiations and finding a political solution to the ongoing confrontation.
Sources said that Maulana Fazlur Rehman has conveyed certain conditions to the two sides for undertaking the proposed mediation. He has made it clear that he would only enter the process if both parties demonstrate seriousness and agree on certain basic principles and issues necessary for meaningful dialogue.
The sources said that if the government and PTI reach an understanding on the fundamental points raised by the JUI (F) chief, Maulana Fazlur Rehman is expected to formally play his role in bridging the widening political divide.
Maulana Fazlur Rehman has reportedly maintained that despite the prevailing tensions, a way forward can still be found through a serious and sincere political effort. He believes that if both sides are prepared to acknowledge each other’s position and show flexibility, a middle ground can emerge.
The JUI (F) chief has also reportedly warned that the use of force against the PTI long march could further aggravate the situation and leave little room for political reconciliation. He is said to have stressed that the current crisis should be addressed through political engagement rather than confrontation.
Against this backdrop, sources indicate that following a positive signal from Maulana Fazlur Rehman, a meeting between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the JUI (F) chief is also under consideration.
The possible involvement of Maulana Fazlur Rehman could represent a significant development, as the political leadership appears to be exploring a negotiated route to prevent further escalation surrounding the PTI’s long march and the broader government opposition confrontation.
However, sources cautioned that the proposed mediation remains conditional and its success would depend largely on whether the government and PTI are willing to accept the basic terms and demonstrate genuine flexibility during the proposed dialogue.
