San Francisco: OpenAI challenged Google’s decades-long hegemony in online search on Thursday by enhancing its ChatGPT generative AI chatbot with search engine capabilities.
In a blog post, OpenAI stated that the change allows “you to get fast, timely answers with links to relevant web sources, which you would have previously needed to go to a search engine for.”
The business claimed that the major update to ChatGPT allows the AI chatbot to offer real-time information with direct links to source material on different subjects, from stock prices and weather predictions to sports scores and breaking news.

The OpenAI website displayed examples similar to Google and Google Maps search results. Additionally, it looked like the user interface of Perplexity, another AI-powered search engine that provides a more conversational Google with answers that cite sources.
An update to ChatGPT has added a new feature that allows users to click the online search icon to manually select the capability or receive results by default.
The business also stated that any publisher or website may choose to show up in ChatGPT’s search results, and OpenAI is actively looking for input from content producers to improve the system even more.

Since their inception, AI chatbots such as ChatGPT and Claude from Anthropic have been restricted by time limits during which the responses they deliver are no longer up to date.
In contrast to Google or Microsoft, which integrate AI responses with online results, OpenAI lacks a standalone search engine that provides more timely data, which has been commonly perceived as a drawback of AI chatbots.
