ISLAMABAD ; March 3, 2023; Finally , the Punjab will go for general elections 2023 on April 30.
Following a communication of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), president , Dr Arif Alvi , picked April 30 for holding general elections in the Punjab.
After going through a bitter controversy, ECP had finally conveyed to the president its willingness to hold general elections between April 30 and May 7,2023.
The president picked up April 30 for holding the elections in Punjab.
Last week , the Supreme Court of Pakistan (SCP) had directed to ECP to either hold elections in Punjab on April 9 or on any other date close to April 9.
Since dissolution of the Punjab and Khyber Pukhtunkhaw (KPK) in last year , the government and Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf (PTI) were on logger heads over the date of the general elections in the Punjab.
PTI wanted the general elections in Punjab within 90 days from the date of dissolution of the provincial assembly . The government , however , wanted to gain some extra time for holding general elections in the Punjab and KPk.
Seeing no end to the controversy, PTI had moved SCP, requesting it to direct ECP to hold elections in KPK and Punjab..
The apex court heard the case and directed to ECP to hold the elections in Punjab within 90 days.
