SCP annuals lifetime disqualification : Justice Afridi gives dissenting note

Politicians, lawyers appreciate SCP ruling

Islamabad : Jan 8 : Pakistan’s top court on Monday delivered a very important decision by annulling the lifetime disqualification, setting a clear road for Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PMLN) supremo , Mian Nawaz Sharif and Istehkam Pakistan Party (IPP) chief , Jahangir Tareen and dozens others , who faced brunt of the decision of the same court given in the Panama papers’ case , to contest 2024 general elections.

Justice Yahya Khan Afridi, a member of a 7- member bench of Pakistan’s top court differed with his six other brothern judges.

Chief justice Qazi Faez Isa announced the judgement of the case. According to the Supreme Court of Pakistan (SCP) disqualification in a case under section 62 F of the constitution could not exceed to five years.

Since many politicians are beneficiary of SCP’s ruling given on Monday , none of the political parties opposed it. The legal and constitutional experts also expressed the decision as a good development that in their views will strengthen democracy in Pakistan.

PMLN which is one of the main beneficiaries termed the SCP decision as a good development . PMLN chief , Shahbaz Sharif , said in his reaction that SCP undid injustice done to Nawaz Sharif . He said the entire nation salutes to SCP for correcting a mistake done by the court in Nawaz Shaif and others’ case. Saad Rafiq of PMLN said SCP’s decision of deleting lifetime disqualification is a great news for every Pakistani and for it he salutes to the judges who delivered this historic decision. Renowned lawyer , Aitzaz Ahsan also appreciated SCP’s decision . He noted that lifetime disqualification was a very harsh decision . Hamid Khan , renowned lawyer and PTI leader , said SCP ‘s decision of setting a side lifelong disqualification is a correct decision and it will have good impact on Pakistan’s politics.
