PESHAWAR – A seven-day polio vaccination campaign is set to take place in Peshawar from February 3 to February 7, 2025, followed by a two-day catch-up campaign on February 8 and 9. The Peshawar Police have issued a comprehensive security plan to protect polio teams and ensure smooth operations. However, serious concerns remain over the safety of police personnel and allegations of massive corruption in polio funds.
Security Measures for Polio Teams
The campaign will be conducted across 103 union councils, with a total of 4,491 police officers deployed for security. Key security measures include:
3,216 officers assigned to protect polio teams.
115 checkpoints set up to counter potential security threats.
1,116 mobile and motorcycle patrol units deployed for rapid response.
Bomb Disposal Unit (BDU) and sniffer dogs will conduct security sweeps in all areas.
Strict orders that no polio team should proceed without security escorts. The security situation remains volatile, as past polio campaigns in Pakistan have been marred by targeted killings of police officers and healthcare workers by militants. Every year, multiple police personnel lose their lives while protecting polio teams, yet their sacrifices often go unrecognized. “Every year, we lose officers during this campaign, but no one acknowledges their bravery!” – A senior police official. Despite putting their lives on the line, police officers assigned to polio duty receive no additional pay or financial incentives. Shocking allegations suggest that funds allocated for their compensation are embezzled by senior officials. Reports indicate that the Capital City Police Officer of Peshawar is accused of misappropriating polio duty funds, depriving frontline officers of their rightful dues. This is not the first time such allegations have surfaced—an investigation into the misuse of polio funds is already pending with NAB (National Accountability Bureau) and the Anti-Corruption Department, yet no significant action has been taken.
“We risk our lives every day, but we get nothing in return! How long will this injustice continue?” – A frustrated police officer.
Additional Security Directives
All officers must wear bulletproof jackets and helmets.
Each police officer must remain in constant contact with control rooms.
Rescue 1122 ambulances and paramedical teams will be on standby.
Traffic police have been instructed to manage congestion and ensure smooth flow of vehicles. The success of the polio campaign relies heavily on the dedication of police officers, who face life-threatening risks daily. However, corruption and mismanagement continue to exploit these brave men and women. Will authorities finally address the concerns of these frontline officers, or will this campaign be yet another example of exploitation under the guise of public service? The fight against polio must not come at the cost of police officers’ lives and rights.
